The Local’s Edge: Steamboat Springs

We realize the struggle of travelling to an unknown destination and not knowing the “honey holes”. Our Local’s Edge Series is here to let you know the inside scoop on our favorite ski towns.  Here’s to you never travelling like a baby deer again.

Heading to Colorado this Winter?  Do yourself a favor – skip Summit County and roll up North to Steamboat Springs!  Despite being coined “Ski Town, USA”, this Winter paradise is often overlooked and hence less trafficked than the resorts off I-70.  Steamboat is located just 3 hours from Denver and is home to some of the best skiing terrain in Colorado. Not only is the skiing fantastic but this rustic town has a booming nightlife, great eats and is home to the annual WinterWondergrass Festival.  Book your trip and keep these tips in mind!

THE SHRED

Take advantage of Steamboat’s trademarked “champagne powder” this season!  Bought the new Ikon Pass? Well you’re in luck – Steamboat has been added to Alterra’s fleet of participating resorts.  With 165 runs and over 2,900 acres of skiable terrain, this resort has skiing for all ages and abilities. Oh and after you take laps all day you have the luxury of soaking in the natural hot springs!

  • On a Powder Day: Lap the Sundown and Storm Peak lifts! Hit up the Closets and Shadows for some steep and deep trees.
  • Best Trees: Don’t leave Steamboat without checking out the 1,2 or 3 O’Clock runs off of Sunshine!
  • Tear Up the Groomers:  Take the whole squad on Buddy’s Run off of Storm Peak!  On the lower mountain, catch some speed on Heavenly Daze.

THE EATS

A world-class ski town wouldn’t be complete without quality restaurants and bars.  Take our word for it – Steamboat Springs does not disappoint the taste buds. Here are some of our favorites!

THE BEST COFFEE SHOP: MOUTAINBREW

But first…coffee.  Stop into this family-owned, local’s favorite coffee shop for a little pick me up and some fresh baked goods!

THE BEST BRUNCH: CREEKSIDE CAFE AND GRILL

You gotta stop by Creekside for brunch if you are having a mellow morning off the hill!  Try one of their breakfast burritos or benedicts and wash it down with a hearty bloody mary!

BEST SANDWICHES: CRUISERS SUB SHOP

Grab a sub on the way to the mountain at Cruisers!  Try one of their signatures – the Tortas Carnitas, Philly or Cali.

BEST RESTAURANT: LAUNDRY

Before serving some of the best food in town, the Laundry was actually a Laundromat.  Try some of their small plates or go all out and devour their fried chicken dish!

BARS AND NIGHTLIFE

If you’re anything like me, a quality nightlife and bar scene can make or break a ski town.  You are in good hands in Steamboat Springs!  Hit the town after a night on the slopes for some libations, dives, and dancing.

BEST BREWERY: BUTCHERKNIFE BREWERY

You came to Colorado for the beer, right?  Hit up the Butcherknife Taproom and try some of their award-winning brews.  Bring your growlers in on Monday and fill them up for half off!

BEST DIVE: THE TBAR

The TBar is a must-go if you are skiing at Steamboat.  Known as a “5-Star Dive Bar”, this rustic establishment will surprise you with a great menu!  Get a stiff drink, some good eats and even play stump!

BEST LIVE MUSIC: SCHMIGGITY’S LIVE MUSIC DANCE HALL

Get your groove on at Schmiggity’s!  Enjoy both local legends and big name bands at this funky, townie bar.

BEST PARTY WEEKEND: WINTERWONDERGRASS FESTIVAL

Pro Tip: Plan your trip to Steamboat during the WinterWondergrass Festival!  Ski all day and dance all night at one of the biggest bluegrass festivals in the country.
