The Local’s Edge: A Summer Guide to Sun Valley

We realize the struggle of travelling to an unknown destination and not knowing the “honey holes”. The Local’s Edge Series is here to let you know the inside scoop on our favorite ski towns.  Here’s to you never travelling like a baby deer again.

In this installment of the Local’s Edge, we wanted to highlight one of our favorite ski towns to visit in the Summer: Sun Valley, Idaho.  This charming town has a little something for everyone in all four seasons! Idaho may be the most underrated state in the country and the town of Ketchum is no exception.  It lies on the brink of the Sawtooth range which provides world-class fishing, biking, hiking, and camping. With over 300 high alpine lakes, there is no shortage of stunning vistas and destination dips to partake in!  Downtown Ketchum is littered with hidden gems including rustic dives, colorful boutiques and an array of eateries rich with character. While Sun Valley is known for attracting the rich and famous, it doesn’t have that hoity-toity vibe of an Aspen or Vail.  The authenticity of this one of a kind ski town will make it hard to leave and keep you coming back for more.

Best Hike

Looking for a day hike filled with wildflowers and all-time vistas?  Hike up to Pioneer Cabin! It is a bit strenuous at 8.5 miles while gaining 2400 feet but worth it when you get to the top.  Hikers can camp in the cabin at a first-come, first serve basis!

Best Day Trip

Taking a trip over to Redfish Lake is a must-do activity!  Redfish may possibly be the most picturesque lake in Idaho and has abundant activities.  Rent a boat, take out a paddleboard out or just lay on the beach and soak in the views.

Best Swimming Hole

Want to take a quick dip without leaving town?  Head down Warm Springs Road to “Big Rock”. Walk behind the skate park and church and you will find a beautiful swimming hole on the Big Wood River.

Best Place to Bring the Doggo’s

While Redfish lake is a natural wonder, it is not the most dog-friendly spot.  Bring the dogs down the road to Alturas Lake where you can bring them to a designated beach with secluded spots to enjoy the day!

Best Mountain Biking

Sun Valley has somehow remained under-the-radar in the biking world despite having over 400 miles of flowy, smooth singletracks complimented by beautiful scenery and a poppin’ town.  Enjoy lift-accessed mountain biking on Bald Mountain with over 3,400 feet of vertical drop to the valley floor! From the Sun Valley gondola take the Warm Springs Trail which descends 2500 feet over nine miles.

Best Soak

Idaho’s pristine geographical location allows for many geothermal pools for travelers to enjoy.  One of those springs is located only 10 miles from Sun Valley resort! Make a stop along the creek at Frenchmans Bend down Warm Springs Road!

Best Breakfast

There’s a line out the door for a reason.  Start your day at Java on Fourth and fuel your adventures!

Best Sandwich

If you want a quality sub head over to the family-owned Johnny G’s.  Get the Delbello…and a $1 draft beer with any sandwich!

Best Craft Cocktails

Treat yourself to a craft cocktail after a day of hiking or biking at Warfield!  Enjoy their handcrafted gin, vodka or beer with some of the best food in town.

Best Dive

This dive started in the late 70’s as a place where the working man & local could come, have a beer & burger and not be bothered. Now, this Sun Valley staple is a classic dive that is known to serve “everyone from Tom Hanks to the Town Drunk”!   Grumpy’s facade is that of vintage beer cans and old license plates which gives it a gritty charm. Come get a 32-ounce schooner and enjoy one of their famous burgers!

Best Atmosphere

Don’t leave Ketchum without stopping at Lefty’s Bar and Grill for a sandwich and beer.  This local dive is perfect for enjoying a brew or two and catching a game on the patio!
